44th WORLD DAY OF PEACE "Religious Freedom, the Path to Peace"
The theme chosen for this year’s World Day of Peace highlights the current historical moment where religious freedom is often being limited or denied in various parts of the world. In some cases, discrimination and intolerance based on religious motives have even led to persecution and violence against minorities. In his message to mark this day, Benedict XVI emphasized that: “To deny or arbitrarily restrict this freedom is to foster a reductive vision of the human person; to eclipse the public role of religion is to create a society which is unjust, inasmuch as it fails to take account of the true nature of the human person; it is to stifle the growth of the authentic and lasting peace of the whole human family.”
This coin shows a depiction of a figure representing religion which breaks a chain and is illuminated by light of the one God. The figure holds in hand a scroll which has written on it, Religious Freedom, the Path to Peace, in Latin, Arabic and Hebrew to symbolize the three great monotheistic religions.
