Uusimaa, which was a province in southern Finland.
Uusimaa Coat of Arms
The Uusimaa provincial coin takes you back in time, to when many Finns lived in industrial environment.
In the 12th century, the people of Uusimaa were still mostly travelling hunters, but the region was discovered by more and more people in the following centuries. People moved to Uusimaa especially from the Southwest Finland and Sweden.
The province was named after the settlers. The name Uusimaa is spelled in the Swedish form ‘ny land’ (‘new land’) already in documents dating back to the 14th century. It was recorded in the Finnish form ‘Wsimaa’ for the first time by Mikael Agricola in 1548 in the preface of his translation of the New Testament.
